June 23, 2015 at 05:32PM Sugarcane: a crop that also produces energy
With the growth in demand for biofuels, using sugarcane by-products such as bagasse and ethanol could become more cost-effective. However, it is necessary to determine the conditions in which production could be both optimum and compatible with high sugar yields. A team from CIRAD, working with the eRcane firm, embarked upon a complex, novel study of the entire production chain, from plot to mill, to determine the impact of production factors on biomass yield and quality, and on aerial biomass distribution between food and energy production.

June 18, 2015 at 02:16PM Coffee: more vigorous plants contain fewer toxins against leaf miners
In the hope of controlling leaf miners, a team from CIRAD has conducted research into the genetic modification of coffee trees using Bacillus thuringiensis genes that code for insecticidal endotoxins. On testing the modified trees in the field, the researchers found that the most vigporous plants were also those with the lowest levels of endotoxins. This was completely unexpected, and was probably due to the promoter used, which proves the importance of conducting field trials in this type of study.
