February 18, 2016 at 04:55PM Oil palm: a step towards marker-assisted breeding
Marker-assisted breeding has not been extensively studied for oil palm due to the cumbersome nature of the genetic techniques required to implement it. To overcome this difficulty, researchers from CIRAD have suggested using data obtained from improvement programmes, during which numerous tests are carried out on progenies for parents whose pedigree is known. This approach has proved particularly good at identifying QTL of use in breeding and could be extended to other species liable to the same problems as oil palm.

February 12, 2016 at 04:09PM Sahelian sorghum: an interesting group of varieties for food and energy production
Sweet sorghum has many advantages for farmers in the Sahel. It is well suited to the local climate and combines human food and animal feed production (grain and leaves) with energy production from its biomass and the sugar in its stems. While not all sorghum varieties have the same potential, and some appear to be multi-purpose. This is the case with some traditional West African landraces. The questions was which ones. Researchers from CIRAD and CERAAS studied 84 traditional sorghum landraces, mostly from Senegal, and pinpointed that ensured a good compromise between grain, sugar and biomass production. They also identified two other groups of landraces that were good for just one use: one for grain production and the other for sugar.
