Les concessions forestières industrielles existent en Afrique depuis plus d'un siècle. Critiquées pour leur contribution limitée au développement rural et pour l'effacement de droits coutumiers qu'elles induisent, elles n'ont pas toujours bonne réputation. En Afrique centrale, les concessions mènent à des aménagements d’espaces spécialisés où concessionnaires et populations locales s’excluent mutuellement. Face à cette pratique, un nouveau type de concession forestière, multi-usages et multi-usagers, se dessine. Le Cirad propose d’en formuler le modèle sous le nom de « Concession 2.0 ». Celle-ci reconnaît les espaces coutumiers au sein et autour de la concession à travers la cartographie participative. Elle organise le partage des revenus de l'exploitation de bois en fonction de l’importance des espaces coutumiers et des contrats passés avec les communautés. Elle permet de développer l'exploitation de ressources autres que le bois d’œuvre en association avec les populations locales. Elle instaure une gouvernance partagée entre les différents acteurs. Enfin, elle favorise à ses côtés l’émergence de concessions communautaires, espaces exclusif potentiellement associés à la concession industrielle. Reste, pour voir évoluer cette nouvelle vision du développement territorial forestier qui combine gestion inclusive et droits exclusifs, à mobiliser les soutiens de l’aide publique au développement et à adapter les législations.
