L’or valeur refuge pourrait bien sceller le destin d’une partie des forêts du Plateau des Guyanes. C’est ce que montrent les travaux de chercheurs du Cirad, du CNRS et de l’Université de Guyane publiés dans la revue Environmental Research Letters . En utilisant pour la première fois des cartes de déforestation annuelle issues d’images satellites à haute résolution, les scientifiques ont examiné l’impact de l’orpaillage sur la forêt tropicale humide du Plateau des Guyanes entre 2001 et 2014. Cette nouvelle analyse, qui couvre le Guyana, le Suriname, la Guyane française et l’Etat brésilien d’Amapá, révèle que lorsque les cours de l’or montent, la déforestation augmente, et inversement. Elle met aussi en évidence de grandes disparités nationales, ce qui plaide pour l’élaboration de politiques de régulation mieux coordonnées à l’échelle du Plateau, et questionne la pertinence des mécanismes globaux de lutte conte la déforestation tels que REDD+.
