Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

BREEDCAFS, a new project led by CIRAD and funded by the EU H2020 programme, aims to diversify the range of varieties available for this more sustainable production method. Two European roasters will be involved in choosing varieties over the course of the project, which is due to begin in April. They will be put in contact with coffee growers practising agroforestry in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Vietnam and Cameroon.

Montpellier has been chosen to host the 4th World Congress on Agroforestry from 20 to 25 May 2019. Organization of the congress, which is held every five years and has never previously been held in Europe, will be led by CIRAD and INRA, in partnership with Agropolis International. More than a thousand participants from both temperate and tropical zones all over the world are expected. They will be discussing the issues surrounding agroforestry, notably the way in which research results can fuel societal debate and public decision-making.

L’agroforesterie est une voie d’adaptation de la production caféière au changement climatique, mais peu de variétés lui sont adaptées. March 31, 2017 at 10:03AM Sustainable Agricultural Landscapes in Southeast Asia: A successful launch for the SALSA partnership platform in Malaysia and Indonesia

Michel Eddi, CEO of CIRAD, joined the President of the French Republic François Hollande during his State visit to Southeast Asia on March 28-30, 2017. On this occasion, he initiated with several CIRAD partners the construction of the SALSA (Sustainable Agricultural Landscapes in Southeast Asia) platform in partnership dedicated to the sustainability of perennial crop systems throughout the region. The launch of this ambitious scientific platform, in which training will be a pivotal component, was formalized by the signing of two multilateral agreements, under the patronage of the French Head of State, in the presence of the Prime Minister of the Malaysian Government and the President of the Republic of Indonesia.
