L’Initiative pour la restauration des paysages forestiers africains, AFR100, a démarré il y a trois ans. Une réunion des partenaires techniques de l’initiative, dont fait partie le Cirad, s’est tenue fin août 2018 au Kenya. Plinio Sist, écologue et directeur de l’unité Forêts et sociétés au Cirad, était présent. Pour lui, la grande victoire de l’AFR 100 est d’avoir réussi à convaincre 26 pays à s’engager au travers d’objectifs chiffrés concrets. Le principal enjeu est aujourd’hui de mettre en œuvre ces engagements aux défis tant environnementaux, alimentaires que sécuritaires. Un enjeu colossal nécessitant des investissements estimés à environ 1,3 milliard d’euros.

Commercial eucalyptus plantations cover some 20 million hectares in a hundred or so countries, and primarily serve to produce paper, while smallholder plantings produce firewood*. However, they are now suffering the effects of climate change. Some 225 scientists and managers from around thirty countries are meeting in Montpellier from 17 to 21 September to discuss ways of adapting plantations.
