A veritable epidemic of coffee leaf rust has been spreading through Central America since 2012. It caused serious yield losses in 2012/2013 (almost 20%), and damage that could affect harvests up to 2016. The total financial losses resulting from the 2012/2013 epidemic look set to reach several hundred million dollars, with extremelt serious social consequences in the agricultural sector.
