In southern countries, local use of biomass to produce energy is seen as a factor for development and a means of alleviating poverty, particularly in rural areas. The potential impacts of these new local energy systems on the living conditions of local people are likely to determine the adoption of innovations in the sector. To contribute to this synergy, CIRAD launched a multidisciplinary, inter-institutional research programme in Madagascar, Burkina Faso, the Brazilian Amazon and Mali. The contrasting results obtained highlight the importance of managing installations and supplies for ensuring the success of such energy production systems.
