December 05, 2013 at 04:25PM Coffee, shade trees and erosion in Costa Rica: sustainable, high-yielding cropping systems

In central Costa Rica, coffee trees, intercropped with shade trees, are grown on steep slopes, subject to intense soil erosion. Using a typology of cropping practices combined with a model that serves to design cropping systems, a team from CIRAD has been able to design agroforestry systems that allevoate such erosion, in line with the complex relations between coffee trees and their environment.
