Tropical rainforests are under unprecendented threat as a result of climate change. Temperatures are rising and look set to continue to do so in the coming decades, while rainfall is likely to decrease. What are the repercussions for tree growth?
Researchers from CIRAD and their partners chose to conduct a meta-analysis of the published data on seasonal tree growth throughout the Tropics. By comparing those data with global climate records, they demonstrated that tree growth was highly seasonal. They also demonstrated that rainfall and sunshine levels within a given ecosystem were the main factors that determined growth, and consequently carbon entry into the system and wood production.
According to the researchers, given the predominant role played by rainfall in seasonal tree growth, tropical forest productivity could well decrease in the coming years.
