The Mediterranean is facing unprecedented social and environmental changes that are increasing its fragility. From 1995 to 2010, the northwestern coast of Egypt saw an unprecedented period of drought. Livestock production has always played a fundamental role in shaping landscapes and in household finances. In response to climate change, and also to growth in tourism and the development of wadis, the Bedouins have adapted. The tribal social structure has played a central role in access to and use of resources, particularly land, and also in families' ability to adapt. They have developed new activities while conserving livestock production as a central part of their society.
