Researchers from CIRAD and their African partners tested the toxicity of certain types of organic waste on soils around Dakar, where market gardening is particularly widely practised. Their results showed that applying those types of organic waste increased levels of certain trace metals – zinc, copper, lead, etc – in the soils concerned. To reduce the risks of ecotoxicity, the researchers recommend diversifying the types of waste applied and adjusting the doses used.
