In Mali, live poultry markets are supplied by a multitude of small village farms. Their poor hygiene standards and animal overcrowding are highly conducive to the transmission of diseases such as Newcastle disease and avian influenza. How can the risks be limited? Based on a vast survey of markets in the country, researchers from CIRAD and their Malian partners have proposed simple, inexpensive measures to remedy this situation. Such as: not mixing different poultry species; not allowing poultry to wander freely on markets; isolating diseased or dead birds; and making visual inspections of the state of poultry on arrival at the market and refusing any diseased birds. The local authorities could also contribute to these efforts by providing water, electricity and disinfection equipment for the daily cleaning of cages and stands.

Magic Gourmet Trading Inc. of Millbrae, CA is recalling all Koi Palace Mooncake products purchased in August 2016 because these items do not contain proper labeling of ingredients and possible allergens. Mooncake products manufactured by Magic Gourmet contain possible allergens such as wheat, gluten, eggs, milk, peanuts, pine nuts, almonds, walnuts, and/or sesame.
