Geographical indications (GIs) or designations of origin, and their protection, are now seen as a major social, territorial and ecological development tool. As such, they are at the heart of international trade issues, and are particularly hotly debated. The prestigious journal World Development this autumn devoted a special report to GIs. It was coordinated and edited by two CIRAD researchers, and presents the results of more than 15 year's work by CIRAD and its partners on the issues surrounding the introduction and governance of GIs in southern countries, against a backdrop of debates between the Old and the New Worlds.
