Scientists at CIRAD and IRD are testing the use of medicinal plants as an alternative to antibiotics in fish farms. Between laboratory analyses and field research, this innovative work is aimed at limiting the global problem of antibiotic resistance and reviving traditional knowledge of small-scale family fish farming in Southeast Asia. Samira Sarter, a researcher at CIRAD, will present different approaches for a prudent use of antibiotics to the 2 500 participants at the AQUA 2018 international congress, to be held in Montpellier from 25 to 29 August.

August 24, 2018 at 10:42AM Japanese encephalitis also affects urban areas

Several research results have recently disproved the theory that Japanese encephalitis is limited to rural areas. The work in question, led by CIRAD, has provided new information on the mechanisms involved in the transmission, persistence and spread of this emerging disease. Half the world’s population is now under threat from Japanese encephalitis. Although vaccination remains the best way of protecting humans, according to researchers, various control methods, from targeted vaccination of farmed pigs to vector control, could restrict virus circulation effectively.

August 23, 2018 at 02:11PM Sustainable fish farming: improving feed efficiency in tilapia

Optimising fish feed is the best way of reducing the economic and environmental costs of aquaculture. In order to select the tilapia that best process the feed given to them, researchers at CIRAD are closely studying feed efficiency. Recent research has shown that there is no correlation between feed efficiency and aggressive behaviour in Nile tilapia. These findings will be presented by Hugues de Verdal, a researcher at CIRAD, to the 2 500 participants at the AQUA 2018 international congress, to be held in Montpellier from 25 to 29 August.

Food systems are situated at the crossroads between the many issues and contradictions surrounding sustainable development: food and nutritional security, human and ecosystem health, natural resource renewal, climate change, territorial dynamics, political stability, and social justice. An international group of experts, including researchers from CIRAD, is calling for profound changes in food systems in order to meet the sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the UN in 2015, and the terms of the Paris Agreement on climate. The authors propose a four-pillar strategy.

August 06, 2018 at 04:58PM The bark side of the force

What forces enable trees to stand upright? To grow straight, plants need a motor system that controls their posture by generating forces to offset gravity. Scientists have long thought that this motor force was controlled only by the internal forces induced in wood. In a study published on 4 August 2018 in New Phytologist , researchers from the CNRS and CIRAD show that bark is also involved in the generation of mechanical stresses in several tree species.
