February 14, 2019 at 10:42AM Milk, a powerful lever for development in the Sahel

In spite of ever-growing demand, dairy supply chains in Africa face several obstacles. Industry prefers to import powdered milk, which is cheaper, rather than collecting the small volumes of milk produced by scattered, isolated family farmers. However, integrating livestock rearing into the national economy could be a powerful lever for development, particularly in the Sahel, where milk is a culturel centrepiece. The idea of strengthening those supply chains that use local milk is steadily gaining ground, and CIRAD is supporting this on several levels. The publication of a CIRAD-OXFAM guidance note and the launch of the Africa-Milk project, funded by the European Union, illustrate the scope of CIRAD's activities, from applied expertise to strategic research.
