Giving open access to research results is a laudable goal in a world of strong competition in the research sector, as in teaching and innovation. What are the advantages? How can we overcome the obstacles? These questions will be at the heart of the first symposium on open science in the global South, organized by CIRAD, IRD and Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar, Senegal, from 23 to 25 October 2019. CIRAD committed to open science as far back as 2006, in signing the Berlin Declaration. Marie-Claude Deboin, Head of Scientific and Technical Information at CIRAD, explains the collective challenge posed by this issue in both North and South.
