October 06, 2020 at 09:35AM Desert locusts are exceptional migrators

Desert locusts are known for the drastic damage they cause in northern Africa and southwestern Asia. What is less well known is that they are also found in the arid zones of southwestern Africa, such as the Namib, which is considered to be the world's oldest desert. Invasions are rare in this region, and generally localized. A team of researchers from CIRAD, INRAE and CNRS recently retraced the history of the divergence of these populations, and discovered that it resulted from recent colonization to the South of the current distribution zone, following a long-distance migration of indivduals from the northern population.
