July 26, 2013 at 03:17PM Local bioenergy production systems: what is the impact on the lives of local people?

In southern countries, local use of biomass to produce energy is seen as a factor for development and a means of alleviating poverty, particularly in rural areas. The potential impacts of these new local energy systems on the living conditions of local people are likely to determine the adoption of innovations in the sector. To contribute to this synergy, CIRAD launched a multidisciplinary, inter-institutional research programme in Madagascar, Burkina Faso, the Brazilian Amazon and Mali. The contrasting results obtained highlight the importance of managing installations and supplies for ensuring the success of such energy production systems.

July 26, 2013 at 03:15PM Transgenic crops: how can insect resistance be managed?

With the growth in the areas planted with transgenic crops that produce insecticide proteins, insects are becoming increasingly resistant. This was the conclusion drawn by a team of researchers from CIRAD and the University of Arizona in a review of the available scientific literature published recently. But why, in some cases, do insects adapt in less than two years, while in others, they still have not managed to adapt after fifteen years? It is all a question of managing resistance: farmers have the means to slow the development of resistance, particularly using refuge zones containing non-modified plants, grown near modified crops.
