December 16, 2013 at 10:54AM E. Torquebiau: "Agriculture is now a part of the talks on climate change"

At the last Conference of the Parties on climate change in November 2013 in Warsaw, developing countries were centre-stage. Given that historically, it is industrialized countries that have been responsible for climate change, these countries do not want to be forced to cut their greenhouse gas emissions. However, they can make a contribution, notably in the field of agriculture.

For several years now, CIRAD has been an observer of these talks, held during the annual Conference of the Parties.

December 09, 2013 at 04:53PM Family farming, a hot topic for the UN and CIRAD in 2014

The United Nations has decided to devote 2014 to family farming. This type of agriculture accounts for the vast majority of farming systems worldwide: it involves some 2.6 billion people, or almost 40% of the world's population, on 500 million farms. This topic has long been a priority for CIRAD, for which people - rural inhabitants and farmers - are a major priority, and which launched a "family farming and globalization" programme as long ago as 1998. In 2014, the organization's teams will be making expert contributions on both the national and international stage.

December 05, 2013 at 04:25PM Coffee, shade trees and erosion in Costa Rica: sustainable, high-yielding cropping systems

In central Costa Rica, coffee trees, intercropped with shade trees, are grown on steep slopes, subject to intense soil erosion. Using a typology of cropping practices combined with a model that serves to design cropping systems, a team from CIRAD has been able to design agroforestry systems that allevoate such erosion, in line with the complex relations between coffee trees and their environment.

December 05, 2013 at 04:32PM Rubber: intercropping with coffee or cocoa is more profitable than monocropping

Intercropping several tree crops is not only possible, but profitable. This was recently demonstrated by researchers from CIRAD and their partners in Ivory Coast who spent 17 years monitoring a trial in which rubber ― a crop grown in the open that can reach a height of more than 25 metres ― and other cash crops suited to shade, such as coffee and cocoa.
