Dans un contexte qui voit émerger de nouvelles attentes, normes et prescriptions pour les systèmes agricoles et agroalimentaires, la recherche agronomique s’interroge sur le besoin de renouveler ses objets, ses échelles et ses approches : quoi et comment évaluer ? Que sont « les performances » des systèmes que l’on vise à améliorer ? De quels systèmes parle-t-on ?
Selon les thématiques, le renouvellement des objets de la recherche agronomique peut amener à définir des limites de systèmes situés bien au-delà de l’agricole ou de l’agroalimentaire.
En s’intéressant aux relations matérielles dans des contextes industriels et urbain, la recherche agronomique est amenée à se positionner par rapport à d’autres domaines de recherche intégrée. Une réflexion menée par un chercheur du Cirad sur le recyclage de résidus organiques l’a ainsi conduit à identifier l’écologie industrielle, en français plus communément désignée par écologie territoriale, comme un cadre de recherche pertinent.

A research group of which CIRAD is a member decided to tackle this question by means of a survey. The scientists involved pinpointed the large gaps between the information supplied and farmers' requirements. Using a comparative approach, they showed that the variety of agricultural, ethnographic and geographical situations meant tailoring climate data to the specific requirements of the farmers.
