June 29, 2017 at 04:22PM Animal and human health: tackling uncertainty through participatory modelling and simulation

Zoonoses – infectious diseases communicable between animals and humans –, drug resistance and environmental pollution are now causing serious health problems worldwide. These problems are closely tied to global environmental and socio-economic changes and to the transformation of production systems

at the territorial level. In this context, health management is becoming a complex issue: it needs to be addressed in close collaboration with the public veterinary health, agriculture and environment sectors. New uncertainties are emerging, and nonconventional actors are entering the scene alongside the decision-makers traditionally responsible for public health. In response to these constraints, researchers are using a participatory modelling and simulation approach , described in this issue of Perspective. The approach incorporates the diverse knowledge of all of these actors. It reveals uncertainties and teaches participants how to manage them, to make decisions and to share responsibility. It constitutes a practical solution to ensure health issues are better integrated into territorial planning policies.

June 30, 2017 at 10:06AM Agricultural research in the global South: steering research beyond impact promises

In the face of major development issues in developing countries, agricultural research for development is increasingly being called upon to demonstrate its usefulness and its impact, particularly among donors and policy makers. To meet this legitimate requirement, CIRAD has developed the “ImpresS” (Impact of Research in the South) approach to document the contribution of research to changes in society and the mechanisms involved along the impact pathway.

This Perspective presents the major lessons learned from the application of this innovative and participatory approach to a collection of 13 ex post case studies, ie after the intervention of research and sometimes over the very long term. It draws the consequences for the practices of both researchers and donors.

To go beyond the impact promises made during the submission of research projects, which are often reduced to a purely rhetorical exercise, CIRAD aims to develop a "culture of impact" that will modify its research practices long term, to be more certain of generating impact on development.
