On October 13, 2017, Relish Foods, Inc. of Culver City, Calif., voluntarily initiated the recall of frozen Newport brand 5 to 8 lb. tuna loins. The recall has since expanded to include: 3 to 5 lb. tuna loins, 6 oz. tuna steaks, and 4 oz. tuna steaks. The recall is the result of sampling by the FDA which revealed that the product has potential to contain the bacteria Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Relish Foods, Inc. is continuing the investigation with the FDA as to what caused the problem.

Hunting has traditionally been a vital source of food and income for many rural families in central Africa. However, growing population pressure and demand for meat from secondary towns and cities have resulted in increased, unsustainable hunting of wild animals. A project on sustainable management of the fauna and wildmeat sector in central Africa conducted in response to this threat to conservation and biodiversity, food security and local means of subsistence served to lay the foundations of participatory management of hunting by villagers. The project, which was led by the FAO and involved CIRAD, ran for five years and was recently completed.

Face à cette menace pour la conservation de la biodiversité, la sécurité alimentaire et les moyens de subsistance locaux, le projet « Gestion durable de la faune et du secteur de la viande de brousse en Afrique centrale », a permis de mettre en place les fondements d’une gestion participative de la chasse villageoise. Piloté par la FAO, avec la participation du Cirad durant ces cinq dernières années, le projet vient de s’achever.
