As part of a priority partnership requested by French President Emmanuel Macron, CIRAD President Managing Director Michel Eddi recently accompanied Didier Guillaume, French Minister of Agriculture and Food, on a trip to the Republic of Angola. Agriculture and agricultural training form the nucleus of cooperation between the two countries, which will make full use of CIRAD's expertise.

Biodiversity and ecosystem services are vital for agricultural production, and CIRAD is working to develop farming systems that are based on and foster biodiversity. Biodiversity is one of CIRAD's six key thematic fields. On the first day of the 7th IPBES* plenary and with a few days to go until publication of its first global assessment report on biodiversity and ecosystem services, we discuss this fundamental issue with Didier Bazile, a CIRAD researcher and member of the French Committee for IPBES.

The Task Force Rural Africa, a group of 11 international experts set up by the European Commission in May 2018, submitted its final report in March 2019, recommending and Africa-Europe agenda for rural transformation. The group is calling for the European Union (EU) and African Union (AU) to put agricultural and rural cooperation at the heart of their relations. This reference document is now at the centre of the burgeoning dialogue between the EU and AU on implementation of the new Africa-Europe Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Jobs. The experts, who included CIRAD's Bruno Losch, came up with a plan of six actions that cover requirements in four strategic fields.

A model developed by CIRAD combines a food crisis early warning system with agriculture-related climate services. It is called SARRA-O, and is the fruit of 30 years' work by CIRAD and of consultations, calibrations, tests and checks with its partners (AGRHYMET, CERAAS, INERA, IER, EMBRAPA, etc). The tool is currently being rolled out, and is due to be presented at AgriNumA, the main digital agriculture event in West Africa.

Caito Foods is voluntarily recalling fresh cut watermelon, fresh cut honeydew melon, fresh cut cantaloupe and fresh cut mixed fruit containing one of these melons, produced at the Caito Foods facility in Indianapolis because these products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella Carrau, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
