February 04, 2015 at 05:04PM Perspective No. 31. Urban agriculture support policies in West Africa. Taking account of informal arrangements

This new issue of Perspective highlights the informal arrangements between crop farmers, livestock farmers, agro-industry and the authorities that sustain urban agriculture in Africa. It argues in favour of taking account of such arrangements in the support policies from which this type of agriculture benefits and in town planning schemes. Urban agriculture has developed significantly in Africa since independence and the exodus towards towns. Moreover, over the past twenty years or so, many international organizations and programmes have stressed the many advantages of urban agriculture in developing countries: it creates jobs and thus income, it produces food, and it improves the environment and living conditions.

February 04, 2015 at 03:08PM 2015: CIRAD takes a close look at the challenges facing agriculture in the wake of climate change

The issue of agriculture in the wake of climate change will be centre-stage in 2015. The high point of the year will be the 21st Conference of the Parties to UN Convention on Climate Change (COP21), in Paris-Le Bourget from 30 November to 11 December. This issue is particularly acute for developing tropical countries, with their large numbers of farmers and high poverty levels. In such countries, making their people less vulnerable and ensuring their food security are top priorities. To shed light on these questions, CIRAD teams will be expressing their expert opinions on the national and international stage throughout 2015.

February 04, 2015 at 05:04PM Perspective N°31.
