August 17, 2015 at 11:25AM In Mexico, are payments for conserving biodiversity effective?

In Mexico, a programme of payments for environmental services (PES) invites forest communities to commit to protecting a wooded area rich in biodiversity in exchange for an annual payment. But how can the efficacy of the programme be measured without determining the area of forest that would have been lost without it? Researchers from CIRAD and their partners recently developed a method for measuring that area, which enabled them to quantify the impact of the programme: 10 to 15% of wooded areas have been preserved thanks to the payments.
