Antibiotic resistance kills 700 000 people worldwide each year. By 2050, the figure could be 10 million a year. To avoid such a catastrophic scenario, researchers from CIRAD in Guadeloupe are working with their partners* to determine how bacteria attack cells. The aim is to find ways of rendering pathogenic bacteria ineffective wihout using antibiotics. The disease the researchers are working on is cowdriosis, a disease caused by the Ehrlichia ruminantium bacterium that kills ruminants in the tropics.
